What To Do When Arthritis Pain Keeps You From Cleaning Your Pennies

by Nathan Gordon

If arthritis pain keeps you from cleaning your old pennies, you need tips to make your tasks easier on you, especially if you can't curve your fingers around your coins. There are simple cleaning tips you can follow that won't require you to bend your fingers. Here's what you do.

Soak Your Coins in Ketchup

Coins can collect dirt, grime and even mildew with time. If your hands didn't hurt, you can use a toothbrush to clean these types of contaminants from your coins. But since you can't use a brush, substitute it instead with ketchup

Ketchup is acidic enough to clear away the grime from the surfaces of your coins. The acids won't penetrate or scratch your coins, which keeps your coins safe from damage.

Here's how you use ketchup to clean your coins:

  • Place your coins in a large bucket, then run warm or cool water over them. You want to loosen up as much grime and dirt as you can.
  • Pour the coins into a colander to drain the water from them.
  • Place the coins on a large cotton towel and let them air dry for one hour.
  • Place the coins in a large plastic container, then pour one large bottle of ketchup over the coins. Gently toss the coins around until the ketchup coats them completely.

Give the coins about 15-20 minutes to soak, then rinse them under cool water. Dry the coins on another towel to dry completely.

Sprinkle Your Coins With Baking Soda

If you have time, you can sprinkle baking soda over your coins to help remove the contaminants. Baking soda also contains chemicals that break down grime and dirt. The chemicals also brightens your coins without having to scrub or rub them. Baking soda is also used to clean other valuable copper items, so it may work well for your pennies.

You simply:

  • Place your coins in a large plastic container.
  • Dampen your coins with water.
  • Sprinkle 3-4 teaspoons of baking soda over your coins, then give the baking soda 10-15 minutes to eat away the grime.
  • Rinse the coins in cold water, then dry them on a large towel.

If you have someone who can help out, have them rub the coins down with a toothbrush before you remove the baking soda. However, don't scrub or rub the coins too hard. You want to avoid scratching the coins' surfaces with the bristles. The coins will look brighter after the cleaning.
